Do you believe intelligence can only be measured by either being “street smart” or “book smart”? Author Gerald Graff was faced with the realities and hardships surrounding this inquiry. Upon reading the article “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff, Graff managed to discuss the negative effects of measuring intelligence by these means. Graff begins establishing his credibility by detailing personal stories and experiences, citing compelling facts, and successfully implementing strategic emotional appeals throughout his article. As the text progresses, readers can identify Graff’s usage of rhetorical strategies such as pathos, logos, and language.
IQ while a good evaluation of a persons ability to solve logic problems is not the epitome of intelligence. If you have IQ with out practical or social intelligence in a significant quantity it wont garner you much success in the world. It needs an addition of that practical or social intelligence in order for you to become exceptionally successful within the world. The examples put forth in the book are of Chris Langan who’s IQ was in the 190 to 200’s range, Terman’s Termites (a group of students with IQ’s of 140+ that Terman followed for his Genetic Studies of Genius.), and Robert Oppenheimer. We also have two differing tests one that touches on just IQ and the other that touches on practical intelligence.
Mike Rose disagrees with the assumption that “Intelligence is closely associated with formal education” (Mike, 247). Formal education does not always measure the level of intelligence of a person. Education as something people can gain not only in school, but every day of their lives. We should be learning from our experiences, and apply this knowledge to our everyday lives. In the readings Hidden Intellectualism, Gerald Graff and Blue-Collar Brilliance, Mike Rose both authors talk about intelligence, and what we understand intelligence to mean. Graff’s uses the words “book and street smarts” to explain his meaning of intellect. Rose uses his mothers and uncles job life experience to explain his. Both authors make it clear that to be intelligent doesn’t always relate to your knowledge of textbooks and readings, but to how you take what you learned in those reading and put them into everyday life experiences. Graff street smart intelligence is someone who is intelligent about life.
There isn’t a great way to measure someone's intelligence in every aspect of life. There are students that may do horribly on standardized tests, yet could do things considered more practical than academic. These students that are more practically intelligent compared to academic have different ways of thinking. People can be very tech savvy, or know how to cook extremely well, both are things that can be learned outside of a formal school setting. Some people just lean towards this type of thinking better than being able to recall facts and analyze information.
What do you think it means to be intelligent? Being intelligent means having self-awareness and understanding, using logic and critical thinking, and having the ability to learn. This is shown in the novel by Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing, John Stienbecks novella, Of Mice and Men, and Richard Connell’s fictional short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”. In the book Where the Crawdads Sing, Kya uses her intelligence all throughout her life to survive on her own in the marsh.
Intellectualism is the factor of being intellect or intelligent. The idea of what it means to be educated can be interpreted many different ways by different people. Some think it’s having a 4.0 and going to Harvard, while others believe in the idea of having common sense. In the essay, “Hidden Intellectualism,” Gerald Graff reflects how lack of education is viewed negatively in society. On top of that, a question also lies what it means to educated.
The Meaning of Intelligence In many instances in everyday life, we always ask this question to ourselves,“What if I were smarter?” Daniel Keyes answers this question well, showing the benefits and hazards of intelligence. In the science fiction story Flowers For Algernon, 37 year old Charlie Gordon goes through a precarious and risky situation in order to improve his 68 IQ intelligence to fit in with others. Struggling through the everyday necessities that others may find effortless, such as reading and writing basic phrases, Charlie is desperate to undergo a surgery that will triple his IQ.
“ The measure of intelligence is the ability to change, ” (Einstein). This shows that the more changing that happens is how much intelligence one has not how intellectual they are. In the short story “Flowers of Algernon” written by Daniel Keyes, a boy named Charlie Gordon is mentally impaired with an IQ of sixty-eight. It is hard for him to function in real society. He has to take tests and do things an average person would be able to do easily.
What Intelligence Means to You explains “In any case, over time, psychologists’ theories have shifted toward the “growth” view. The current science suggests that intelligence is something that can improve. It does take hard work, but not brain surgery.” The article is trying to express that everyone has the ability to learn and it takes hard work. Everyone learns differently.
When most people think of geniuses, the first person that typically comes to mind is Albert Einstein. Being the highly successful physicist he was, many aspire to be like him. But, did you know that despite how intelligent Einstein was, he was quite forgetful? Einstein typically had a hard time with recalling names or memorizing certain material (Wolff, B., & Goodman, H., n.d.). This begs the question: to what extent can memory, particularly working memory and long-term memory, predict intelligence?

In today’s society, there are many different types of relationships – same-sex couples, interracial couples, and couples with an age gap. Most people tend to assume that romantic partners are close in age; however, there are a number of couples with a large age gap. In Western societies, these relationships, commonly known as “May-December romances,” are often occur between older males and younger females, though the reverse can occur as well (i.e., a relationship between older females and younger males). There is, however, a double standard that is seen in age-gap couples. Typically, older men and younger women couples are regarded as more conventional, whereas younger men and older women couples are considered more unorthodox.
Many people grow to be intelligent by studying and learning so much in school. But even at a young age, Albert was an incredibly intellectual person in a logical sense. He may not have been able to walk until three years old, but in school, he was incredibly accelerated. “By the time he was 13, Albert was reading and understanding scientific material that many adults would have found impossible to follow” (Ireland 7). This shows that Albert Einstein is intelligent because it shows how gifted he was above all people.
Are young adult and older teens the comparable? Many people would say they are very much identical. Older teens are from the age range of 16-18. 18-25 is the age group of young adults. How ever, older teens and young adults have similarities such as; having some of the same interest in music, games, and clothing, also making mistakes.
