Freshman Success The definition of success is simply, “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose” (“Success”). For some people, their success could be having a dream car or the perfect job. For others, success could be as simple as running an extra mile at the gym. The idea of success is relative, but everybody has an experience of when they felt accomplished. I’ve always been shy, so success to me means challenging myself and becoming more independent. My first week away at college is a time I felt successful because I made new friends, I learned how to handle situations on my own, and I now have new memories from this experience. I had never been too far from home, so this was a new challenge I was excited for. As I moved into my dorm, I realized that for the first time in years I would have to share my room with someone else. Even more frightening was the fact that I did not know this person, other than a few text messages between us. When she arrived at the dorm I couldn’t have had a better first impression of her. Her and her family were so sweet and welcoming and I felt better about being away from my family. The college campus was a lot different compared to my small high school. Classes were no longer in the same building and some were across the campus, and planning ahead was a must. For the first time, I had to create my own schedule making sure I was at class, at practice, and homework was done while still having time to socialize. Even though I didn’t perfect time management in the first week, I did learn that having a plan in the first place can help keep you on track. Setting personal goals also helped me stay ahead in class and at practice. I could handle these situations on my own and become more independent which made me feel
