Equal. Equal is defined as, “Like or alike in quantity, degree, value etc.; of the same rank, ability, merit etc.’ This is exactly what comes to my mind when I define the word ‘equal’. I would like to think that everyone defines equal as this as well. Unfortunately, not everyone has the same understanding. Equality means that a woman should not be asked to resign because she becomes pregnant. Equality means that men and women shouldn’t be degraded or humiliated because of their physical appearance. Equality means that women need to be placed at a male dominated construction site. Fair play is what we have been taught since grade school, it shouldn’t come hard to us as we become adults. Because of this hunger for freedom, I grew up with a different mentality from my sisters. I remember that at a very young age, I knew what I wanted. I knew that I didn’t want to be pushed around. I knew that I didn’t want to be told no. But most of all, I knew that I wanted to do this all as a girl. Girls all over the world face challenges. Baby girls in China, India, and many more countries are killed or abandoned by their families because they are simply unwanted. Unwanted because of the money a family loses when the girl is married. Girls like Malala Yousafzai, the school-girl that was shot in the head by a Taliban militant, have taken matters into their own hands. Malala knew that if she spoke in public about how unfair the ban on girls’ education in the Swat Valley is, she and her family would be murdered. That is why she created a blog under a pen name, and now has been awarded more than 10 awards
