Tired is the state of being in need of rest; a feeling that has plagued the teenage population especially. With busy schedules sleep seems to often be an after-thought to much of society, especially young adults. Lack of sleep causes tiredness to appear as the sun rises and come on stronger midday. The feeling can make a person become drained and fatigued until it seems impossible to keep focus on the task ahead. I will attempt to define the meaning of tired through its origins, untraditional meanings, and conventional definition. Like most English words used in modern day America, tired, is a derivative of an even older word, teorian. Which means to fail, It was used to explain failure or the ending of something. Its second definition which is more commonly know today is physical exhaustion. English citizens in the 1400s began to use this word to describe their weariness because they didn’t have technological advances and conveniences that Americans now have to complete everyday tasks. What comes to mind is the lack of sleep and images of students yawning during class, but its meaning can extend to various situations. Tired is a feeling present in an athlete after completing a triathlon. Along with a 20-something-year old who’s in need of a revelation after working a 9-5 office job for too many years. Or a couple who has been attempting a long distance relationship and the miles apart have become too much of a distance. A person can become drained from a situation they’re continuously living in, or from completing an activity or event.
