When asked what it means to be a woman, many people define it as many things. Some say a woman is to be a female, wife, daughter, mother, etc. Others may define it as being the opposite of a man or by what their roles are. When I’m asked what it means to be a woman, I think of it as being a hard worker and being responsible for what is done in the house. Honestly, it’s not easy being a woman and meeting all the expectations that others have of them. Even if men are looked as being stronger than women, I believe women are so much stronger because they have to go through a lot in life. They have to go through being told what to do, not having the same rights as men, having to give birth, and meeting certain expectations as a wife, mother, and daughter. After all this, according to Professions for Women “she still has many ghosts to fight, many prejudices to overcome.”

From what I learned in class, men’s paintings usually include men who are strong, athletic, smart, wealthy, and hardworking. What about women? “Less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art sections are women, but 85% are nudes of women.” This suggests that men are better than women because most artists are men, but what if men were required to do what a woman does? They wouldn’t handle the stress even if they’re stronger.
In our society some ideals of femininity include nurturing their children, completing the house chores, cooking, and meeting the needs of a man (do what they want). Women are expected to nurture their children, go to parent teacher conferences, and attend the needs of their children while the male/husband/man is working.
