What is the most catastrophic issue in the United States today? Is it overseas with ISIS, illegal immigration on the borders or the economy? The problem is that those problems are what Americans see as the most pressing issues when in all reality the problem is not a foreign threat or the economy, it is the lack of protection for forest and bodies of water across the United States. The biomes just mentioned are home to some of the most important factors in an American’s everyday life. The forests are the sanctuary of wildlife, all the wood used for heating houses,building houses,furniture and other household appliances. The lack of protection of forest is leading to erosion, loss of habitats and will inevitably end with a lack of wood as a cheap building material. “deforestation in tropical rainforests adds more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere than the sum total of cars and trucks on the world’s roads.”( ) This article even points out that deforestation adds more carbon dioxide to the air than all the cars in the world. The added carbon dioxide to the air is destroying the ozone layer and increasing global warming, the effect of this is ruining the equilibrium of ecosystems. The most apparent location this is seen is the melting of the polar ice caps. Deforestation also occurs to supply for paper for school or offices. The most simplistic way to end that is to do as much work as possible online. Not only does this practice save money from not buying paper it saves the environment. Another way to stop the deforestation is to only support companies who are against deforestation and use more eco-friendly ways of getting there wood. “If you are buying products made from virgin forest fiber, make sure that it bears a seal from a credible forestry certification system, like the Forest Stewardship Council.” The supporting of the companies that make these products will help in the fight to stop deforestation.
