Domestic troubles, financial concerns, illogical reasoning, a desire for vengeance, and pent-up rage are all reasons for homicide. A serial killer is distinguished by the fact that the murderer will carry out several homicides over a long period of time. Due to the fear that these killers instill in others, the majority of serial killers are branded as mad and mentally ill by society. We have all seen pictures of people like Charles Manson, Adolf Hitler and Ted Bundy, horrible people and infamous killers. To people who have never experienced something like this, the thought is, “How did they become this way? How could someone ever want to kill someone else?” The answers to these questions are hard to completely understand, but the answers can be broken down into three categories to simplify the explanation; physical, mental and social reasons. But even though we broke them down there are still a lot of reasons of why and how someone becomes a killer.
Serial killers have significantly affected people’s lives for thousands of years however, we’ve only recently been getting an insight into why they commit these horrendous acts of violence. Many people have written it off as pure evil but there is more to these people that meets the eye. One famous serial killer was Joel Rifkin. Through many psychological tests and brain scans, researchers were able to learn more about his brain and the parts of it that did not function correctly. The defective or damaged parts of his brain had a large role to play in the murders he committed and even this information can help us identify dangerous behavior and possibly prevent the death of innocent people.
Killer Formation Are people born with the mind of a killer, or are they raised that way? Every killer has a different story as to why they behave violently towards others. Some may have horrific childhoods which permanently alters the way their brain works, and some have an imbalance in the chemistry of their brain, having a combination of the two makes for some of the most prolific serial killers of all time. There is not just one reason as to why someone turns homicidal in nature; it is a mixture of the way people are raised and how their brain chemistry is altered. Observations of the brain of a serial killer show reduced prefrontal gray matter; gray matter is responsible for muscle control, sensory perception, emotions, self control and decision making.
Male serial killers tend to use “hands-on” methods like shooting, strangling, suffocating, stabbing, or bludgeoning their victims with knives, blunt objects, and even their own hands to kill (Keeney and Heidi 385 and Hickey qtd. in Hinch and Hepburn). Not only are male serial killers more violent when killing, but also in the time prior to the kill. It is not uncommon for the males to torture the victim before death, or to defile the body after death.
News headlines scream the names of these people, calling them monsters, animals, inhumane, taking the lives of the innocent for the pleasure of their control and power. This is the story of a serial killer, a person who lacks the empathy and guilt of a normal human being, but unknown to some are the effects physically and mentally of what they have been through in life that can cause this to happen. Killers are created by genetic, psychological, abuse, and family issues. Genetics contribute to how a person controls themselves, and affects their emotions and how they process things. There are certain genes that can create higher levels of aggression and emotional control issues.
‘The Psychology of a Murderer What makes a murderer? Is it a psychological issues, a dark obsession, a story of their past, a compulsive disorder? Is there perhaps a more inner and deeper reason why they do these said things. Maybe the worlds most clinically insane can help shed a light on the dark parts of a murderers brain. “Nobody owns life, but anyone who can pick up a frying pan owns death” (Burroughs S.).
