Killer Formation
Are people born with the mind of a killer, or are they raised that way? Every killer has a different story as to why they behave violently towards others. Some may have horrific childhoods which permanently alters the way their brain works, and some have an imbalance in the chemistry of their brain, having a combination of the two makes for some of the most prolific serial killers of all time. There is not just one reason as to why someone turns homicidal in nature; it is a mixture of the way people are raised and how their brain chemistry is altered.
Observations of the brain of a serial killer show reduced prefrontal gray matter; gray matter is responsible for muscle control, sensory perception, emotions, self control and decision making. The lack of substance in the brain alters their ability to control impulses, thus leading them into performing violent actions on their victims. According to Doctor Robert Hare; “Psychopaths are not disoriented or out of touch with reality, nor do they experience the delusions, hallucinations, or intense subjective distress that characterize most other mental disorders … Unlike psychotic individuals, psychopaths are rational and aware of what they are doing and why. Their behavior is the result of choice, freely exercised.” (Cullen) People with mental illnesses are prominent in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. Many serial killers are psychopaths, but not all psychopaths are serial killers.
