In many story diving to complex relationships, there are often overtones of both dependency and psychological attachment. In Bloodchild, many of these overtones are present and point words some form of abuse. In the story, not only do we have the chemical dependency that the humans have with their symbiotic relationships with the alien creature involving the narcotic nature of their eggs but For Gan’s family, is a scale of emotional dependency. To Gan, T’Gatoi was no different from a relative almost akin to an Aunt in this regard. He actively sought out her comfort and embrace in a way he describes as safe. Simple put Gan view her as someone who loves him and loves her back. This is due to their nature; The question is why they might form such a nature considering their differences and violent nature of the humans and alien relationship. …show more content…

During the story, they liken the process of not consuming the egg to being sober and it was made abundantly clear when T’Gatoi said, “Sit down there with your sisters and enjoy not being sober. You had most of the egg. Lien, come warm me.” (“Bloodchild”). In some aspect, the eggs might be used as a pain killer as well given how Gan was given more than normal the day before the egg laying. The eggs also seem to have the beneficial side effect of longevity and vitality, allowing a person to live a relatively long and healthy life. These eggs are seemed to be given to people at a very young age. In this regard, it is akin to modern ideology of drug dependency.
