Desmond Doss saved 75 lives in the middle of an active battle ground without a weapon or assistance. Doss didn’t kill a single enemy soldier. His only weapons were his beloved Bible and his undeniable faith in God. On April 1, 1942 Desmond Doss joined the U.S. Army. Desmond wanted to put his own life at risk to help save his adored country. He desperately wanted to be an Army medic so he could save life instead of take it. During training he refused to carry a gun of any kind. He was raised with firm belief in the Bible. He believed his duty was to obey God and serve his country, but it had to be in that exact order. His belief caused major problems among his fellow soldiers. His commanding officers even tried to get him thrown out of the Army for disobeying their commands.He was constantly mistreated. The bullet shattered his bone and he was gradually losing blood. Despite the gruesome condition Doss was in, he still wanted to help the wounded that were unable to get to safety on their own. Doss crawled on the ground from soldier to soldier to avoid the enemy’s line of sight. He treated wounds as best he could with the supplies he had. If he found a severely wounded soldier he would drag them to the fringe of the humongous cliff, quickly tie a rope around their torso, and lower them down to safety. He even saved a few Japanese soldiers who had been wounded and had no help. Doss did this for 12 straight hours. The whole time repeating the words “Lord help me get one more.” Desmond Doss saved 75 souls during one of the bloodiest battles of WWII. Desmond received the nation’s highest award for bravery during battle. Out of 16 million soldiers that fought only 431 received the same award.
