9.3% of the united states are diagnosed with diabetes, Diabetes is a metabolic disease where the pancreas can not produce insulin to keep the glucose at baseline level. Patients with diabetes have to take insulin shots to allow the glucose to be transported to the cells, if the glucose levels are bellow baseline patients have to take sugar tablets. In experiments we performed in class we have understood how insulin and glucose effect the body, the egg experiment allowed us to understand how sugar effects the water in are body, In diagrams we drew it showed us how sugar entered the cell using insulin.
The egg experiment showed us how water reacts in the presence of sugar, sugar cant get through semipermeable membranes, which is the outside of the egg is made of. It relates to diabetes because the presence of a large amount of sugar in your blood stream makes your kidney pull the sugar out of the bloodstream and is turned into urine, thats why diabetics have high glucose levels in there urine. Diabetics have to drink lots of water due to the lost of water in there bodies. The loss of water can …show more content…

Insulin is created by the cell to be used as an access key to allow the glucose to get into the cell. The insulin fits itself into the insulin receptor, which sends a signal down to the nucleus which the sends up a glucose channel that fits into the cell membrane allowing glucose to travel into the cell. Since diabetics don’t have insulin in there blood stream the glucose cant get to the cells and the cells start to die also the water gets pulled out causing dehydration to the body. If the blood sugar is to low glucagon is released into the blood stream to bring the glucose level back to baseline. Glucagon is produced in the pancreas. Diabetics can still produce glucagon because it is made from alfa cells that aren't changed, but insulin cant be made because it uses beta
