The movie Forrest Gump expresses the importance of self-respect and self-desire. Throughout the movie, the audience witnesses’ obstacles and several achievements the main character Forrest Gump faces from childhood to adulthood. With this, the audience is able to observe his growth and gather personality traits, understand Forrest’s relationships with other characters, determine how the main character overcomes certain situations, and witness his strengths and weaknesses. From the knowledge gathered from abnormal psychology, this paper will use research to discuss Autism, clinical impressions, examine possible treatment plans, and the diagnosis of Forrest Gump.

In Forrest’s case, the audience is able to observe his innocence by the way he talks about himself. He states that he has been an “idiot from birth” (Forrest Gump, Tisch 1994). It is intriguing to see how his mother’s uplifting personality had such a positive impact on him and when it comes to what others say. It allows him to joke and talk about himself in a mean way from time, however he enforces boundaries for when people try to intimidate him. An example of Forrest’s generosity is when he states, “Momma said there’s only so much fortune a man really needs and the rest is just for showing off. So, I gave a whole bunch of it to the Foursquare Gospel Church and I gave a whole bunch to the Bayou La Batre Fishing Hospital. And even though Bubba was dead, and Lieutenant Dan said I was nuts, I gave Bubba’s momma Bubba’s share. And you know what? She didn’t have to work in nobody’s kitchen no more” (Forrest Gump, Tisch 1994). He demonstrates his lack of understanding social rules when he shows the president his “buttocks” after discussing his wound with him. He misunderstands the presidents humor, and instead takes his sarcasm seriously thinking that it was acceptable to show off his wounded bottom at the ceremony. He is often clueless to the social context of the events that are happening around him and also demonstrates a limited ability of attempting to express his feelings. With many of Forrest’s accomplishments, he would brush them off as if they were not an achievement and he did not deserve credit for his hard work.
