Popular consent is the idea that the government must derive its powers from the consent of the people it governs.

Social Contract Theory- The authority to rule is granted to the government by the people, who make a contract with the government.-- Each side has obligations to be met to make the contract become valid. Social contract is the foundation of any government. They require that you give up certain rights so that society can function as a whole.
According to John Locke, the sole purpose of government was to protect natural rights (life,liberty and property). The power that individuals should have over the government, according to Locke, was the right to overthrow the government if they are not protecting their natural rights.

The
