In Chapter 9 of the book “Major Problems in California History” the authors use the key term “Hollywood” which is known as the “film colony” where movie stars lived and played. The author uses the term “Hollywood” as life in a movie by stating, “The existence of “Hollywood” as a residential community proved that the kind of life depicted on the silver screen could be found in reality.” Also, the author uses the key term “Hollywood” as a glamorous version of the American Dream by stating, “Ordinary people became acquainted with the movie stars’ opulent lifestyle through stories and photographs in fan magazines. Another way the key term “Hollywood” could be considered is as a resort city also named “Hollywood” located in southeastern Florida.

In the time of the butterflies by Julia Alvarez is a novel that tells the story of four sisters in the Dominican Republic who get involved in a movement against regime of Rafael Trujillo. With each sisters perspective, it is clear the harsh ways Trujillo’s regime has impacted people in the Dominican Republic lives over the years and how people have rebelled against it. Each sister has sacrificed so much to just to stand up for what they believe in and stand up against Trujillo. In Julia Alvarez’s novel In the Time of the Butterflies, she depicts the Mirabal sisters as revolutionaries through the characteristics of bravery and commitment.
Massachusetts and Nevada are different in many ways when it comes to their government. From the number of terms one is able to serve in a certain position to the qualifications to become a voter both states have their own way of running themselves. It’s interesting to see how states governments can vary when it comes to local government and political parties and support programs for their residents. In Nevada, the Governor of the State of Nevada is the highest state office.
The California and United States Constitution are similar and different in many ways, an example that manifests this is in California’s constitution where the Governor has the power to “line veto” a bill, meaning that he has the power to address some parts of a bill with still the availability of ignoring certain fragments. While in the United States, the president can “pocket veto” a law but cannot pick which sections he’d wish to keep or get rid of. However if he does not act within ten days of receiving the bill it can become a law without the presidential signature. The location of these two settlements were greatly different and served different purposes. Also, the reasons behind building these settlements were different. Lastly, the problems that both settlements faced were different. The location of these two settlements were in two different modern-day states.
A: The common features of these colonies were all based on their economies. The economies were all based on large plantations. Each colony had at least one main cash crop, mostly tobacco or rice. The large plantations needed someone to tend to the crops, so the owners of these plots used slaves to harvest their crops. Slaves were either african americans or indentured servants.
Differences Between the Colonies The three Northern and Southern Colonies on the eastern side of early America, have their similarities, but that still doesn’t compare to their vast differences .When contrasted, the topic can go from religion, to climate, and even to the very accent or language that they may speak. Then in return, giving each colony their own “distinct” qualities to be represented for.
The Virginia colony differed from their native land New England, in many different aspects. The Virginia colony had slightly different views on government, religion and society. The colonist were members of the Anglican faith (a tradition within Christianity comprising the Church of England and churches which are historically tied to it or hold similar beliefs, worship practices and church structures). Which is the official Church of England.
California, a state rich in natural resources with a long coastline, was a very ideal piece of land to many. As such, when America gained California, there was conflict over how it should be admitted into the union. The 36 30 line meant to dictate which slaves were slave or free split California in half. Eventually, California was admitted as a free state in the Great Compromise of 1850. This compromise allowed California to be admitted as a free state while also revising the Fugitive Slave Act, which now required US citizens to aid slaveholders by reporting all runaway slaves.
There are several differences in the states of Utah and Nevada with one of them being having different lifestyles. Utah has the healthiest individuals in the United States. The state is inhabited by Mormons and they are a strong influence to the state. The state of Utah is a more restricted society as well. Mormons live quiet lives and the consumption of tobacco and alcohol is non-existent.
Cherokee Nation versus Georgia In the Indian Removal Act, there were three sides to whether or not the Cherokee Nation should have their land taken from them. There was the state of Georgia, the Supreme Court, and the Cherokee Nation. In the end, it was up to the Supreme Court to decide if the Cherokee Nation was a foreign state or not, but this did not stop the state of Georgia as well as the Cherokee Nation from expressing their views on why or why not the Cherokee Nation should be considered a foreign nation. Georgia believed that the Cherokee Nation was not a part of the United States.
California was born in the middle of many issues of conflict. Crisis over slavery, political legitimacy, and conflict over land, labor, race and ethnicity ( Competing Vision 132 ).During the mid 1800’s California saw many transformations, some positive some negative. There was a slow reservations development for Indians, but a better established land ownership. With certain political figures, who rallied to remove laws, which discriminated against African Americans and rather high religious tolerance, California was taking a distinct shape.
The colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia were a start of the new world for England. These were founded by similar people but, with their strikingly differences, grew into separate political, economic and social structures. Both settlements arose from over-crowdedness in England: people wanted a better life. Virginia was settled by men who were single and looking for opportunities and wealth. They were part of the Anglican religion.
The three main colonies that we hear about are Virginia, Plymouth, and Massachusetts. These three colonies basically define all the others, as each group and its main founder either went for a personal financial gain or to escape religious persecution. Virginia was originally settled by Captain John Smith and grew into a successful trade colony through tobacco. Plymouth was originally founded by the Separatists and was lead by William Bradford. Eventually the dwindling Plymouth joined with Massachusetts which was originally Puritan based.
