There is a huge variety of different school types to be found in the education sector; they can be state schools, independent schools or private schools. The Majority of the state schools are what’s known as comprehensive. This means they take both sexes and children of all academic abilities. Grammar Schools are still available in some Local Authorities however they normally only cater for single-sex education. Within the state funded system, some schools have become specialist schools, e.g. for sports or languages and these schools can get extra funding. They are independent in their finances and governance. Independent schools are funded by a combination of tuition fees that are paid by the parents, charitable endowments, gifts and income from investments. Some independent schools are of ‘charitable status’; this means that they are able to claim exemption from tax. All independent schools that are Local government supported public schools are allowed to claim charitable deductions for any donations made to them.
Independent schools do not have to follow the national curriculum. The governing body is responsible for all the day to day running of the school. Their admissions policy is decided and implemented by the Head Teacher in conjunction with the governing body, as is the employment of staff. The Head Teacher or the governing body may buy in and administer additional support services. All independent schools must register with the DFE (Department for Education) under the Education Act 2002 and any new school must have made its applications before the school begins to function and admit pupils.
