He argues that the concept of mental illness has far outlived the purpose it was supposed to achieve and today has degenerated into a convenient myth. Role of Psychiatry He questions the role of Psychiatry which claims to cure ‘mental illness’ when no such thing exists in the first place. He argues that most of what they claim to be mental illnesses are actually diseases of the brain, which are largely the domain of neurology.
Mental illnesses have a high prevalence amongst the United States population. Each year, tens of millions of individuals suffer and are affected by mental illnesses (National Institute of Mental Health, 1). These illnesses range from anxiety disorder, eating disorders, major depression, personality disorder, and many more. Yet, with the existing knowledge, mental providers and professionals, and the DSM-5, mental illness remains a growing mystery to the public. Literature has played a significant role in how mental illnesses are defined, their characteristics, and the portrayal of those who are mentally ill to the public eye.
Although, the author believes that curing mental illness as a spiritual
(303) However today he espouses a more hopeful outlook, saying “society no longer trusts what psychiatry says about mental disorders and its drugs”. (304) However, I don’t fully agree with that statement. I do believe that as a society we are becoming better versed in mental health, medications, the marriage between the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry, but I don’t believe we completely distrust the field of psychiatry.
Meaning she thinks drug therapy is good. Taslma states, “The increase in utilization of medications for psychological and behavioral disorders can be attributed to greater awareness among patients that mental health disorders are treatable and that available drug therapies are safe and effective, according to David Muzina, MD, a national practice leader of the Medco Neuroscience Therapeutic Resource Center. (1)” I plan to use this as my counterargument quote for my essay. Sure, mental health disorders can be treated with drugs but it’s not all and sure drug therapy can be safe but only for some mental disorders.
However, when mental health issues are not treated or addressed the issues can become more costly in the long run in terms of ER visits and repeat admissions. However, there remains a
With mental health first being documented in 1100 B.C. there have been millennia for scientific opinions to develop to get to where it is today. Before modern-day medicine, it’s been documented that throughout history, struggling with mental health was equivalent to the behavior and actions of animals. Furthermore, the lack of education made the treatment given to those struggling with mental health inflict physical damage upon the body. Ingrid Farreas, a professor at Hood College, published an online article in 2020 about the history of mental health, stating that “While inhumane by today’s standards, the view of insanity at the time likened the mentally ill to animals…who did not have the capacity to reason [and] could not control themselves.” (Farreras).
Mental health hides in the shadows of over 1 out of 5 Americans. Obama, our former president, wrote and spoke a speech to help citizens of America realize President Obama used many different types of rhetorical devices and style techniques in his speech called “Reduce the stigma, You are Not alone”. Obama’s speech become very impactful to those who are struggling with mental illnesses in the shadows as well as with those who are not aware of how much is actually affected by mental illnesses. Obama uses a lot of Pathos as well as logos within his speech. This makes the speech become very impactful because with a little bit of emotion and a little bit of logic this could go a long way.
In the book Girl, Interrupted, by Susanna Kaysen, one of the biggest focal points is mental illness. Mental illness can be tough to talk about, simply because the phrase “mental illness” encompasses such a wide range of conditions and conjures up images of deranged people, but it is very important, especially in this book. There is a certain stigma that people who are put into mental hospitals because they have medical problems or are insane and a possible danger to society. While this is sometimes true, it is far more common for patients to need help for a disorder, but just don’t know where to go or what to do, and can end up putting themselves or someone else in danger.
Society has begun to change and accept mental illness in a more positive way. We now are able to recognise
When people hear the words, “mental illness,” they think of insane asylums and psychiatric wards, but that’s not necessarily the case. Yes, back in the 1800’s they did have asylums for people with mental disorders. But that was when doctors didn’t fully understand mental illnesses and disorders. But currently, doctors are able to comprehend illnesses and disorders.
This message could give the wrong idea to people especially younger audiences that behavior like this will be awarded and in the end leave a “happy ending”. This is also an inaccurate representation of actual psychological treatment received, as phycologists these days are more invested and respecting towards those with illnesses and created a motive toward establishing a more helping environment. Not only can bad influences like these can be seen in the novel, but inaccuracy is
