Lydia Maria Child wrote “Prejudices against People of Color” it was written in 1836. When slavery was one of the biggest issues with the United States. There was a big separation on those who were for slavery and those who were against. Lydia was a woman ahead of her time who wrote that even when slavery is abolished this is still a lot of racisms and human right issue with how African American are treated. Even when a slave is set free they still do not have any rights they are treated like they are less then human.
For me, discrimination as an Asian American still exists. Since my parents came here as immigrants, I am often asked where I am from. My Capstone project is a website that describes how Asian Americans are portrayed as a model minority. The topic of Asian Americans has not been covered a lot in mainstream history courses and was briefly covered in the DOC series, so the model minority label is ambiguous. My project is divided into three sections that will explain what a model minority is and the effects of the label. The first section provides a definition and significance of being a model minority. The second section describes discrimination of Asian Americans in the past that helps to give the context for the model minority title.
There is American Indian or Alaska Native. Black or African American. Asian, such as Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and of course, Vietnamese. Discrimination is widely known in these areas of the world. Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.
Deviance is categorized as a violation of cultural norms. In order for one to express deviance, they must act out against societal norms which are known as expectations and rules that "lead the way" for how an individual should act. Therefore, its much easier to depict from there that mostly one's society is what ultimately differentiates what the rules and expectations are as well as what it needed to break those rules that they have somewhat instilled and ingrained into our daily lives. To add, due to society and different eras of socialization deviant behavior evolves over time.
In The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Mon Kidd, the story mentions about the relationship between Lily and a colored boy named Zach is very exceptional. Back in their time, most white people would not think about dating or being with someone who was black. It was like a rule because of segregation in the U.S. However, Lily and Zach are attracted to each other, although they are different races. When Lily meets Zach, she is surprised that she falls in love with him, because she is always use to thinking that black people are not attractive.
Discrimination is very common throughout history and has been happening for hundreds of years. Over 62% of hate crimes were against Asian Americans since 2020. For the last few years, we have been dealing with the pandemic. Americans thought they had it bad but Asian Americans have it worse. They have been discriminated against and many hate crimes were directed towards them.
The effects of black discrimination have haunted the nation for centuries. Despite cover-all acts and amendments, there have always been ways around anti-discrimination laws. Even following Union victory, some southerners withheld slaves until troops were at their doorsteps. The Black Codes, laws that outlined the rights of African Americans, are perfect examples. These Codes, were lists of societal restrictions meant to keep whites on top.
The skin is the largest organ of the human body and can display a range of different colors depending on the amount of melanin, a protein produced by special skin cells, that is in the skin. The more melanin that is created, the darker the skin tone. Despite the fact skin color is such a minor physiological difference, many have decided that it is enough of a reason to hate and discriminate against the minorities who possess a little more melanin than they do. This prejudice has managed to extensively infiltrate the justice system and law enforcement, causing black men to face multiple injustices such as being more likely to be convicted and given longer prison sentences than white men for the same crimes, having higher chances of being shot
Do people discriminate others to hurt them or they do not realize what their actions are doing? Racial discrimination is when a person is treated less favorably than another person in a similar situation because of their race, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin or immigrant status. One of the biggest discrimination in this country is racial discrimination towards Latinos and people of color. Racial discrimination has become a part of everyday life in America. We have to stop this hatred in our country because this country is based on freedom, peace, and home of immigrants.
When you go to the store and buy a soda and the cashier says that is one dollar and six cents and you don’t have enough money only because of that one cent. America is making thousands of pennies every year yet nobody uses them. Pennies should be removed because they are a waste of materials, money and space. First, the penny is pulling the government deeper into debt because they cost to much to make.
It is very true that African Americans have made many strides in the past few decades in relation to equality and freedom. However, racism and segregation are still present to this day. Many African Americans are killed and mistreated simply because of the pigment in their skin. The only difference is, many people are still oblivious to this fact more than they were years ago. This blindness comes from the idea that America has overcome these racial conditions.
For individual discrimination, it is mainly that through our personal experiences and lessons learned and received in the past, to prejudiced another person. At the same time, institutional discrimination usually produce prejudice to the most of large institutions and organizations for part of the race and ethnic. In current society, individual discrimination is often released in the color issue today; we often are isolated by our own color. Sometimes, people who the white drive in the cars are easier to get forgiveness and understanding of police officers, but for other color race, these people usually tend to be suspects by other people. To me an American is someone who can make a difference in the world, someone who can be a free citizen, born and raised in the United States. The idea that everyone around us is viewed equally, looked at from the same perspective. Segregation is a thing in the past, a place where people come to see fairness and equality among people. Yes, compared to past times fairness and equality in America is better but there are still many disagreements among jobs and schooling, and crimes that are viewed at differently by race. We are protected by the bill of rights which provides us with a lot of safety.
After a troublesome and torrid time, the black people or what so called slaves, were entering the 20th century with hope of not being discriminated after the slavery had been abolished in the late 19th century. The beginning of 20th century had overseen the stampede of worldwide immigrants to America as they seek for a better life. As for African-Americans, they were entering the phase where they found themselves almost identical with the past century despite the slavery being abolished. Though the abolishment of slavery was written in the 13th Amendment, some of the states still legalized it. They were still in the same position as they were before in some of the states in America.
