Though there may be many people who say that immigrants are bad for the Economy, the immigrants have a positive impact on the economy and have been making it better for quite some time. When immigrants come to the U.S., they create more jobs, and a higher demand for products, increasing the value of our economy. The effect that immigration has on the country can be a complex and highly controversial subject. Some members of the British population have a very negative perception of what immigration brings with it, whilst others agree that it brings diversity and a boost to every aspect of life. This effect is also caused by the fact that some migrants are willing to work for lower wages than locals. Not only does this mean less money is moving through the system, it makes employers more likely to search for foreign workers causing the effect to snowball and affecting minimum wage. When in reality most immigrants aren’t eligible for welfare benefits (Griswold, 2012). Barriers to welfare include, “Title IV of the Personal Responsibility and the Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996”, which make it challenging for immigrants to become legal permanent residents of the United States (Griswold, 2012). Programs such as “Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Food Stamps, Supplemental Security Income, and Medicaid”, will only support a family “for at least the first five years of their residency” (Griswold, 2012). These programs will only support legal immigrants, for illegal immigrants there are almost no programs that they can be eligible for (Griswold, 2012). Immigrants don’t come to the U.S. to just collect welfare and quote “get off easy”, they come here to work and make a better living for their families and the future generations and just like the case with welfare many immigrations don’t “abuse” the healthcare system like some Americans would like to
