Leadership Philosophy Chief Petty Officers owe to their organizations a sound understanding of leadership. Senior Enlisted Leaders (SEL’s) are retained in the military primarily to serve as leaders who effectively maximize the efforts of others so the Navy and Coast Guard can achieve its goals. Effective leaders in the chief’s mess set the tone and are visible amongst the command while constantly leading by example. This paper will explain the author’s leadership philosophy, refer to several influential leaders throughout his career, and incorporate three leadership behaviors from the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) feedback. Introduction The Korean and Vietnam wars are seen as failures to some and were unpopular in the United States at the time they were fought. The veterans who survived the wars and came home were not met with compassion, instead they were rejected by the masses because they saw the war as unjust and no interest to the United States. The commanders of both wars Generals MacArthur and Westmoreland would forever be associated with how the wars ended in less than victory. In this essay, one will analyze the two generals, compare and contrast their leadership philosophies, and view both men historically. When I raised my hand, and took my oath of service I had no idea of the journey Leadership Philosophy that laid ahead of me. Joining late in life was one transition, but the transition into the Non-Commission Officer (NCO) Corps, and a leader has been a very rewarding experience. The values that were instilled in me as a child and those that have been drilled into my make-up as an NCO are very similar. The tenants of the seven Army Values have been what I have lived by most of my life and career, however there are four out of the seven values that I hold most valuable and live out on a day to day basis.

Being a junior Marine who just got to the fleet about 4 months ago, I’ve really started to realize how big and how diverse leadership can be. When I studied leadership styles while doing Leading Marines, they explain the three main leadership styles that one can be. Authoritarian leaders are clear on their expectations and extremely strict about making sure the mission gets accomplished. They are independent and make decisions without little to no input from anyone else. Then there is the complete opposite, Delegative leaders.
Every successful United States Military Academy cadet must know how to be a leader. And in order to be a leader, one must believe in himself and in the people around him. One must believe that he has everything it takes to fight the good fight of faith—he must have values. A leader must possess the commitment needed to move forward with ideas; the relentless determination to seek the truth, to achieve new heights, and to ultimately open the eyes of the uninformed. A leader must possess teamwork skills and utilize them to the best of his ability; essentially working and cooperating with others and potentially getting them on their feet working toward the completion of goals, past all impediments, overcoming all obstacles.
I believe that leaders in the military and leaders within business oriented organizations exhibit the same traits and qualities because leaders regardless of the situation or context share the same traits. “Trait theories of leadership considers personal qualities and characteristics that differentiate leaders from non-leaders” (Robbins 333). The trait theories of leadership basically indicate that all leaders share the same traits or characteristics. These traits apply to leaders in the military and private sector. Leaders typically have traits such has self-control, decisiveness, and responsibility.
Leaders must also prioritize resources if they are limited by allocating the right amount of resources to the right individuals and they must always be prepared for the backlash that comes with having to make decisions on how much of a resource an individual gets, because not everyone will be happy with the decision you made and at times may feel like you are doing them wrong. Leader’s ability to adjust to situations is another big responsibility, as this is where the leaders and followers are easy to pick out. As a leader being able to adjust to any given situation is what makes you stand out from the rest and is what helps subordinates respect you and what to help you accomplish given missions and
This creed given to the Young Officer Course of 2014 has all the answers to becoming a leader who truly leads by example “Fit to Fight Fit to Lead” Soldiers and war go hand in hand therefor it would be expected for soldiers to go into training so that when the time comes for the war he/ she is competent and physically capable of overcoming the enemy. As the officer in charge of these men who will send them into battle, you would want to be certain that if you send your men into fight that they won’t desert the country or the mission given and that they can be successful in achieving the goal.
The three skills are Leads, Develops, and Achieves. I try to use this method of leadership when leading others I influence and motivate them to pursue the goal. Also by leading from the form and doing setting the standard. Secondly, when developing my subordinates, I try to implement a positive environment so that all my soldiers can flourish and work as a team. A positive environment helps encourage soldiers to take the initiative and may cause them to want to work harder to gain more individual responsibility.

Furthermore, a study made by Amit et al about leadership-shaping experience found that a group of soldiers who had more leadership experiences were perceived to be leaders compared to those who did not . This points to the fact that exercises in self-development and discipline were key to building leadership qualities. Leaders as mentioned before are role-models in society and when those leadership qualities are nurtured, the society as a whole benefits from them.
