Divergent: A Dystopian Society

Sometimes people envision themselves as living in a perfect society, but in reality most aren't. In so many ways where they live reflects off of a dystopian universe. In this universe many elements are like a dystopia. A dystopia is a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression,disease, and overcrowding. This universe also has elements that are particularly common in a dystopia. Some people have an illusion that a utopia, but truly censorship of ideas and information, and people living in dehumanized places. In Divergent the people have an illusion that their faction is splendid and that the way they live is the right way. In the novel, Tori the lady who gave Tris her test tells Tris about her brother who is divergent like Tris. She says, “In the second stage of training, George he got really good, really fast. He said the simulations weren't even scary to them they were like a game. So the instructors took a special interest in him. Piled into the room when he went under, instead of just letting the instructor report his results, and whispered about him all the time. The last day of simulations, one of the dauntless leaders came in to see it himself in the next day George he was gone”(Roth 259). This shows that the leaders of each faction don't like when people do things that make them look bad. In this instance George had made the Dauntless look bad because it looked as if the test was cheated.In the real world censorship is still an idea today. North Koreans live in the most censored country in the world. Their government hides certain information about the way there country is run and the countries outside of it. Most Korean citizens think that the internet is not allowed in order to protect the west. It’s more than just having an illusion of a utopian society and censorship that make up a dystopian universe.
