Fighting Fears in the novel Divergent Veronica Roth creates a world where your life depends on the faction you choose. Her world is divided into five “factions”: Abnegation, Candor, Erudite, Amity, and Dauntless. Through Tris’ journey of the faction she chose, her and Four, a Dauntless leader, form a bond that leads both to success. In the novel Divergent, Tris and Four are main characters who prove everyone encounters fears, but the way you react to them is how they affect you. This novel is based off a young girl named “Tris” who scored as divergent on the aptitude test. In this world, being divergent is extremely dangerous, but despite it she is determined to thrive. Realistically, Four is the opposite of that and had a genuine heart, which helps him obtain connections through the novel. Being a Dauntless leader can come with a big role, and having certain attributes, which is why Four does not let his fear consume him. Four has a fear of heights which we do not realize until the moment he must face it climbing the ferris wheel. “Becoming fearless isn’t the point, that’s impossible, it’s learning how to control your fear and how to be free from it” (Roth 239). This further proves that Four does have a fear, but he has learned how to control it to prevent it from commanding him. He knows how to work around it, and act in the moment without being devoured by it. Four is a pure hearted person, who is attentive and refrains from making unnecessary violence. Four makes an authentic statement to Tris, telling her that if he wanted to hurt her that he would have already (Roth 165). This demonstrates that Four does in fact care and does not want to do any harm. When you think of how a Dauntless leader should be, it would be the opposite of Four, further proof that even if you think you are incompatible, you still have a chance and should fight for it.
