Affirmative action policies promote diversity in public spaces, which will prepare students for future after graduation. This is essential because the world has become rapidly diverse, especially in the United States. Furthermore, affirmative action provides an environment for minority students in which they can have more chances to overcome their handicaps and to compete equally. From many aspects, minorities still have many obstacles to excel in this society, especially due to their socioeconomic status. Proponents of affirmative action programs assert that non-minority students blame their failure on this policy.
The diversity that may be found all around the world and in our very community has always fascinated me. I am aware that it is a widely held belief that being a minority is considered a disadvantage in various aspects and I would disagree with this. Diversity and culture is a two-way street- as a community, whether that be society as a whole or simply a freshman class, we have the potential to be able to learn from each other. I believe that my status as an underrepresented minority has shaped me into the person I am today. Despite moving to the United States at a young age and being a first-generation college student , I am grateful for the privilege to be able to further my education at the University of Utah.
Every human being belongs to a specific type of race or possibly multiple races depending on his/her background. As a population, society views their fellow citizens according to their certain race. For some, culture and traditions of their own race means everything to them and these people are proud of who they are and where they come from. However, for some races their background and pride carries burdens.
No matter their race, students should not feel socially unaccepted at school. In the essay, "Learning in the shadow of Race and Class" by Bell Hooks, she states “After my parents dropped me at the predominately white’s woman college, I saw the terror in my roommate’s face that she was going to be housed with someone black, and I requested a change.” (288). Bell explains the level of discomfort while being at a “white woman’s college.” Students should never have to feel like they’re not welcomed in schools.
In Nicholas A. Bowman’s “Promoting Participation in a Diverse Democracy: A Meta-Analysis of College Diversity Experiences and Civic Engagement” he claims that college, surrounded by disagreement and difference, the point of the public sphere, lays an important foundation for individuals to not only participate, but also prosper in society. America’s success is dependent on civic engagement. Bowman’s investigation into the correlation between college diversity experience and civic engagement, says that those exposed to the diversity that colleges provide, allows students to be active in political and civic atmospheres . Exposure to diversity permits students to inquire about different lifestyles, while giving them an opportunity to enter discourse about personal, civic interests. Bowman argues, “…college students who engage in diversity experience may become more aware of issues of difference, inequality, and/or discrimination, which could lead to greater importance placed on personal involvement in civic action” (35).
In a terrifying dystopia, “People will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think” (Huxley 1). Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, shows the starkness of a world where uniformity is paramount and diversity is despised as the root of instability. No one thinks for themselves, but instead they simple echo what they have been programmed to say. Every person is bred to act and think the same as others in their social class. Diversity is shunned along with old world beliefs and conservative morals.
In the novel Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger readers are introduced to a young man named Holden Caulfield, who introduces himself and begins to tell his story of how and why he left his school; Pencey Prep. In the story, Holden explains how he is being kicked out of school and doesn 't want his parents to know and so leaves school early. throughout the story, Holden explains what happens to him before he must go home and act like he is home from school for a break instead of being kicked out. When it comes to the topic of Author 's purpose of The will of the individual vs the will of the majority some will think the purpose is to show that Holden going against the will of society to rebel, however, I think the author’s purpose of The Catcher in the Rye was to show that the individual will manifest in his desire for isolation comes from his is fear and damage done by fear of pain, failure, rejection, and is unwilling or unable to go along with the majority. The more information I learn about this issue, the more surprised I am that our society still exhibits bias, because as much as the United States preaches about equality, it appears as if society has segregation in minor ways. Although the debate between whether there are biased questions on the SATs or not seems to favor that there aren’t by popular opinions, there is still biased behavior occurring in school systems that prevent certain groups of students from getting the proper resources needed. Because I would like to work in an low-income area, which most likely would contain minorities, as a teacher I would make the effort to help those students get the sufficient help needed. This motivates me to become a part of the education field, because caring teachers are much needed in area like this.
However, in the classroom I made assumptions about our students, such as believing college was the natural course for all of them after high school, and that is was always a destination, not an option. Minorities have made significant strides towards equality in American society. In America the minority groups are being stereotype due to their ethnicity. The media has had a significant impact in passing the stereotypes to the work that have convey negative impressions about certain ethnic groups. Minorities have been the victim of an industry that relies on old ideas to appeal to the "majority" at the expense of a minority group ideals (Horton, Price, and Brown 1999). Stereotypes have been portraying negative characteristics of ethnic group in general.
Diversity may mean different things to different people. To me, diversity is exactly that, being different and unique. Diversity makes the world a beautiful place to be, and full of interesting and different people. The beauty of human civilization lies in its diverse groups and cultures.
Positionality Paper Throughout the semester, we have had the opportunity to study many different social identities and their impacts on my life. For the purpose of this paper, the three social identities I have decided to focus on are: gender, nation of origin and race. Key Influences/Specific Events My gender was my first known identity, even before my name was given or before I had taken my first breath.
This same reason is why I wanted to live on campus at the University of Colorado Boulder, to escape, to be myself, or at least attempt to be myself… whoever I am. However, what I had found is that although this university claims to be a diverse place, it in fact has protected the heteronormative, white, affluent culture behind the Flatiron mountain range. What I have come to realise is that my dreams of studying government and then law for the sole purpose of eradicating education inequity will be meaningless due to the lack of foundation in a diverse understanding of the issues at hand. My difficulty with the University of Colorado Boulder is not my dissent towards the university wholly but the surrounding factors I have taken into account. Upon my first semester I was enthralled with the information and theories presented to me by my professors of political science, it was in these classrooms that I solidified my intent to make an impact in the lives of others.
Families have many different ways they could be defined. I would describe my family as being blended. My brother has a different father than me, and he is still considered family. This aspect is important in my concept of family because even if I do not talk to them everyday, I still have this connection where they will support the decisions that I want to make even if it is not an opinion that everyone agrees with. On the contrary, there is definitely diversity by having a blended family, especially since they have been a part of most of my life.
