Doctor James Grant is a licensed doctor in the medical issues of children. He decided that he would study the effects of abuse on a child. Now he wasn’t going to place a child in an unstable environment. One, because he didn’t want to hurt a child and two, because he didn’t want to lose his job. When he went to look in the files he found Thomas “Tommy” Alexander. His parents had been reported many times but always hid everything before they could get any evidence on them. No one knew what to do to help this boy. Dr. Grant came up with a way to help Thomas. He would take a child who isn’t abused in anyway shape or form, and Thomas who is in an abusive home, he would show the differences between their behaviors. The fact of the matter is it crushes the child. The child is likely to become isolated in the society around them because of fear. Parents want to make their children act right but this is not the way to get a child to behave. Putting a child in their “place” should be a gentle approach, it should not be something the child will forever be scared of. Children deserve a safe place, some place they want to come home to. The child may develop anxiety, depression, withdrawal from friends, difficulty concentrating, academic problems, flashbacks, difficulty sleeping, as well as many other mental issues. They may even begin to self harm, attempt suicide, or attempting to run away from home. The children who get abused often lash out on the people around them or isolate themselves. In the case of being sexually abused, there is a chance that they will go on to sexually abuse others they get close to. Also in mental abuse they child will avoiding riding the bus, seek attention, show decreased interest in school, or have loss of previously acquired developmental signs. The signs of abuse are usually overlooked or not noticed. The child may even blame it on an accident such as a fall or sports.
