Below I will lay out my strategy for helping Donald Trump pass the School Choice And Education Opportunity Act.
Despite Donald Trump lacking government experience, he does have the ability to rally people together. In order to get this legislation passed, Donald Trump will need to convince Congress, Outside groups (lobbyists), and the public. Donald Trump does have a few advantages entering his presidency; Republicans hold the majority in the House and the Senate. The President and the Congress being from the same party does help reduce tension, especially when it comes to passing laws. Not only does CER advocate for school choice, they also advocate for the creation of more charter schools in the United States. CER partners with think tanks and other organizations such as the Reason Foundation or to help them spread their message regarding school choice and charter schools. Trump needs lobbying groups like CER to help convince Congress that his bill is right. Donald Trump’s appointee of Betsy DeVos chairwoman of American Federation for Children, an organization that seeks to help parents find the best schools for their children scares teacher’s unions and supporters of public education. According to the WSJ, DeVos’s opponents claim that she is completely opposed to public education, which is simply not the case. DeVos just advocates for parents and families having a choice of where they send their children to school (Riley 1). Again, I believe where Trump runs into issues when it comes to the public is clarification. If Trump and his advisors were able to clarify and set out a plan to the public, there would be less confusion and less tension.
