During his imprisonment, he went insane in solitary confinement. However, Mr. Lorry brought him out of the prison and back into normal society along with his daughter Lucie. As is mentioned in the book, Dr. Manette was considered recalled to life. Everyone agrees Mr. Lorry referenced recalled to life when speaking of Dr. Manette. However, some believe the doctor was recalled to life, while others doubt it. Deprived of people for over 18 years, he must have been troubled and lonely. Relationships are essential to our lives. For instance, Genesis 2:18 says, “ it is not good for men to be alone”. When Lucy came, she brought reason and purpose back into his life. He now had a familial relationship. Trust and partnership were woven back into his life. Furthermore, his occupation changed. Before prison, Dr. Manette was a doctor. Ironically, being a doctor is what got him into prison. In prison, he could hardly be a doctor without patients. Instead, he took up shoemaking along with his insanity. When Lucy came, he remembered the former life he had led as a doctor before his 18 years of insanity. After going home with Lucie, he went back as a doctor. His occupation was alive again. Some people say that Dr. Manette was not recalled to life. They say he relapsed into fits of insanity from his earlier shoemaking prison days. Dr. Manette was still imprisoned in his mind and the right trigger could send him back into insanity. That's hardly being recalled to life. This reasoning, however, is inadequate. Dr. Manette was himself when Lucy recalled him to life. There were consequences of his so-called ‘death’. He would suffer from these fits but always be restored to normal. He was recalled, but he continuously battled his past until he reached the point of restoration. Dr. Manette was recalled to life when Lucy soothingly talked to and nurtured him. Lucy was one of the only people to be able to coax him out of his fits. Dr. Manette needed Lucy in order to have a purpose in life. When Lucie left on her honeymoon, Dr. Manette was submerged in his longest insanity period for nine days. Mr. Lorry was barely able to bring reason back to him. However, This reasoning is flawed. Dr. Manette was dependent on Lucy for a time. But gradually he was able to talk to others normally and lead a normal life without her. By his last fit, he agreed to leave the past behind. Lucy was like his medicine.
