No matter who it is, how old they are, everyone has a dream. Whether it is to become a doctor or achieving something important, there is always someone who wants to achieve their dream. But there is something you have to give up in order for you to achieve that dream you want. It takes time, dedication, and most importantly, to believe in yourself that you can achieve that dream. In the play Our Town written by Thornton Wilder, we meet Mrs. Gibbs who is the mother of George Gibbs. In the play, Mrs. Gibbs has a deferred dream, but not everyone can see that. You might not even know she had this dream, but never achieved it. In the first act, when Mrs. Gibbs was talking with Mrs. Webb, she mentioned that she had this dream of visiting Paris, France. Coming from her words, “Y'know, Myrtle, it's been the dream of my life to see Paris, France. Oh, I don't know. It sounds crazy, I suppose, but for years I've been promising myself that if we ever had the chance” (Wilder, 19), Mrs. Gibbs had this dream of visiting Paris, but never goes. By Act 3, about twelve years later, we saw that Mrs. Gibbs has died of pneumonia and still has not gone to Paris. This tells us that she had a deferred dream and also something very important. Her early death helps us know the idea about death and how sometimes, death comes quickly and usually very unexpectedly. Gibbs and Walter had deferred dreams, and it’s not because they just quit on that dream, it’s because their dreams were interrupted by something that they did not even know was coming. Walter had this goal of opening his own liquor store but never did, but there was a bright light that showed him a new dream. A dream of living happy with his family in a new neighborhood in a new house. In Our town, there was a character who had a dream and accomplished it. George had this dream of living a happy life with Emily and as we see later on in the story, George and Emily marry each other. During this time, in Act three, Emily dies at giving birth and leaves George depressed. At this point, Wilder leaves a strong message to the audience. He left them thinking about how that humans do not fully appreciate life while they live it. George should just enjoy and appreciate his life and the people of those around him before he also too
