Most dress codes in schools hyperfocus on girls and their bodies and what they're wearing. Saying that showing shoulders is provocative for other peers, but why should women's shoulders offend people when it's a normal body part everyone has? Dress codes all over America overstimulate girls but boys can almost wear whatever they want. 44% of schools enforce a “strict” dress code that most girls find sexist or unfair claiming that “they should not be shamed for their bodies instead if it is really a problem, teach boys how to control themselves.”(Gobb). Why should teen girls in school be constantly shamed for body parts everyone has?
Studies have shown that girls get dress coded 5x more than boys. This proves that there is discrimination in schools towards girls, schools put too much pressure on girls and how they should dress. School dress codes often put more restrictions on what girls should wear and how to dress. The National Women's Law Center did a report on school dress codes in the District of Columbia. The group is called NWLC for short. The report states, "These rules aren't neutral. Many target girls, and especially black girls, by regulating skirt length and headwrap. It's not just discrimination against girls in schools, it's discrimination against other cultures. People should be allowed to wear headwraps and hijabs And the rules aren't applied equally, either.
