Drew is like many children who have a lack of motivation in class. They may not think that they have the ability to complete assignments due to the fact that they have not gotten enough out of their lessons. This could be because his attention is elsewhere; which means Emily may not be engaging him enough. Though, Drew seems to attribute his lack of interest and low grades to the idea that he is just not the science type. Drew has an entity view on his abilities; which keeps him from thinking he can build on to the knowledge he already has. This can lead to him believing that his skill levels in science are fixed in place limiting his ability to perform related tasks. Drew is missing the confidence he needs in himself and his abilities in the classroom. Emily has many strategies available to help her motivate Drew to succeed in her class. Emily can also ask him to review the notes he has taken with her at the end of class to make sure he did not miss anything. By doing this, Drew is able to pay attention to what Emily is telling the class because he is focused on recording her lessons. Moreover, this also gives him the opportunity to study every day by doing a review with Emily. Drew may not know at first that this is actually giving him the tools he needs to be able to succeed in his science class. However, as each day goes by, Drew is able to contribute more to classroom discussions and get higher scores on assignments or tests based off of the notes he has been taking in class. This helps Drew build confidence in his science skills and knowledge; which to could give him the confidence needed to continue his routine of note taking throughout his
