Driving, a major monument in every teenager’s life. They can’t wait to get that license and have that ticket to freedom. It’s their parent’s time to finally not have to chauffeur their children around to every activity they participate in. Your child just passed their drivers test, and you no longer have to worry about carting them around; seems great right? Think again. It has been reported that teens account of nearly 11% of all vehicle crashes in the United States. According to Highway Safety crashes are the leading cause for death in teens. This may seem cliché, but some insurance companies give discounts for teens with good grades. Majority of the time, good grades mean responsible teens. And responsible teens are less likely to drive recklessly. Mahatma Gandhi was quoted, “An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.” Telling them how to drive is one thing but giving them the experience is another. Put them through the tests of the road when you are with them. If they know what to do in those split second moments before disaster, it will help them tremendously. With this knowledge, they will be more confident when it comes to real life situations on their own. Wear your seat belt! I get that it’s not the “cool” thing to do, but they’re made for a reason. There are teens that I know who say that they would rather be thrown from the car is better than being trapped inside. You are at a higher risk of death when you are launched from the car onto the pavement then you would be of being stuck in the car. I’m not sure where our generation has picked up the idea of whether or not seat belts are the cool thing, but we need to change that mindset. More than half of all teen crash related deaths were because they were not wearing their seat belt. That shows that half of the deaths could have been prevented by just one little
