Handcuffed and Confused Many Americans assume that the drug enforcement agency (D.E.A) is an organization that has successfully protect the u.s from drug-related crimes. While the dea has reduced the number of drug users they have hardly made a difference in the, roughly, 40 years they have been active. While those who are robbing people for hard drugs get away, the D.E.A. targets various, state legal, cannabis head shops. In a period of time at which over 50% of Americans wish to legalize cannabis for both industrial and recreational purposes, America is trillions of dollars in debt, and the amount of overall drug users is at an all time low, we must consider, as Americans why we are still funding this failing program? The D.E.A. should no longer be funded due to its growing budget and the cost of the inmates they imprison. Unfortunately, in a time where America is crippled by debt, the spending allowance of the D.E.A. has continually increased. The increase of their budget has allowed room for higher salaries for an outdated career. In a table posted by the drug enforcement agency, the budget from 1996 to 2014 has rose more than 100% - or roughly one million dollars - for the salaries and equipment of 11,055 total employees, (Drug Enforcement Agency). These cartels use the money made from the drugs to buy weapons and ammunition. In fact, “ a group of colombians sued the Chinese Counterfeit Market to launder more than $5 billion for drug traffickers in the United States” (citation). These funds could potentially promote more traffickers r even be used on other illegal goods or services. Granted, the use of drug money has aided dangerous groups; however, if drugs were decriminalized, cartels would no longer thrive from that business and would eventually perish if these narcotics are being used illegally to fund illegal groups, why not make them legal to fund legal strongholds such as states? In a handful of states, simple products like cannabis have fully been legalized. Within the first week of legalization in Colorado, made over $2,000,000 dollars if the laws were removed and the federal government taxed the businesses that sold it; America could be debt free within 20 years. With states making marijuana legal for recreation and cartels dropping like flies the D.E.A. is practically making more criminals than if they didn’t go after drug
