A recent study shows that approximately seventeen percent of American teens drink, smoke and drug during the day (Narconon, 2015). Drugs are increasingly becoming an immense problem throughout schools today, but not just in high schools. Kids nowadays are even beginning to use drugs as early as middle school. So should there be drug testing for students? There is an abundance of problems with drugs in schools today; affecting many, however, there are solutions in keeping schools drug free. By drug testing students, schools will know whether or not their students are using drugs, in order to get help for those students who are using, and to help prevent other kids from using them as well. The problem with drugs in schools today is that more and more students are using, selling, and know where to hide them. According to narconon.org, ninety percent of students admit that they know where to get drugs during the school day (Narconon, 2015). They are smuggling it in in makeup containers, water bottles, electronic equipment, etc. Students are even soaking gummy bears with alcohol in order to get drunk in class. Some believe that the tests are too costly, and the funds could be used more effectively, but it is such a small price to pay to potentially save a child’s life. Others feel that students will cheat and bring in someone else’s urine. However, if you require the urine sample be provided “in house” they would not be able to cheat. Extracurricular activities and athletics are pro-social activities that may be protective of substance use. When a positive drug test leads to suspension from these activities, the effects can be detrimental (John).
