Drug Testing
Drug testing is used to detect various illegal substances such as marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, and opiates within a person’s system. They can use urine, hair follicle, saliva and blood to test for illegal substances. Illegal drugs within the school systems has always been prominent and they have attempted to prevent the use of those substances with programs such as D.A.R.E. Students participating with or without athletics should be drug tested to prevent the use of illegal drugs as well as provide an opportunity of intervention in the students drug abuse.
High School athletes began participating in a drug screening within the school system which tested for steroids. They primarily tested for steroids to prevent the unfair advantage against another school. They also wanted to prevent the drug use amongst their students. According to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, only one high school athlete out of 500 tested positive for steroid use during the testing process ("White House Drug Czar Heralds Results of New Jersey Random …show more content…
