Should schools be able to randomly drug test students ?

Students should not be required to take a drug test because it is really none of their business about what a student does outside of school. Drug testing students may not make a difference in the drug usage of students outside of school. “There was no effect on any group of students ' reported intentions to use substances in the future. Of the students subject to drug testing, 34 percent reported that they "definitely will" or "probably will" use substances in the next 12 months, compared with 33 percent of comparable students in schools without the program. There was no evidence that the drug testing reduced students ' participation in extracurricular …show more content…

“The positive tests are confirmed by a highly accurate scientific process and then reviewed by a physician who consults with the student to insure that the test is accurate and that there is no valid reason the student is testing positive from legitimate prescription drug use.” If a student has a positive test it is reviewed by a physician and has a conversation with the student that has failed the test and makes sure the student is not on a prescription. If the student is on a prescription then he/she is free to go. How do schools fund drug testing ? “Drug testing is a bargain, costing about $10-20 per test. If 50% of eligible students are tested on a random basis during the school year, for 1,000 eligible students the cost of the tests is about $5,000 to $10,000 if the school handles collection and about $12,500 if a Third Party Administrator (TPA) is used. A TPA is an outside agency employed by the school to manage the testing processes.Funding may be obtained from grants, private organizations, local businesses, nonprofit foundations, or donations. For a community it is much less expensive to use effective education and prevention techniques.” Most schools get grants and donations to fund the drug testing but the schools that do not accept grants or donations have to calculate it out of their yearly budget which can be rather expensive.
