Student no. 1318304 Phil 1002 exam Section A 1) Thommie Shelby puts forward his belief that a collective black identity is not necessary for black solidarity. This belief stems from a pragmatic nationalist view that views blacks uniting as a result of suffering from a common oppression. Du Bois rejects such beliefs as he states that black identity is essential for black solidarity as there is a need for conserving of their racial identity. Further Du Bois feel that if no collective action is taken then in time the black themselves will be absorbed into an Anglo-American society and such an event should not occur. Behind every decision is a thought process , behind every reason is a rational and it is because of such that Shelby views beliefs as a crucial part of racism. If person A were to hate person b , it would have to be for a reason. Despite the skin colour , all humans reason. Now if person A ( white man) hated person B ( black man) for a business reason , it will not be seen as resist and this is why beliefs are so important. It is what the individual believes that makes him or her racist. Someone whom may not be a violent person, does not have to perform any action but rather still have a belief that they are superior to another whom is inferior. This shows racism, racism is the belief that one is superior to another. However Garcia accounts racism as raced based hatred or ill-will. Garcia strongly believes racism is based on the account of one’s skin colour. Due to the inability of evaluating beliefs it can’t be said that racism comes from ones beliefs, rather their emotions. Garcia argues that one need not to act nor speak to display racism but rather have a hostility that racism has. Further Garcia believes racism comes from hatred and ill-will.
