The observation of an ESL program was completed in the Kindergarten classroom #005A with Mrs. Wohlfeill at Bernhard Moos Elementary School. The ESL program that was evident while observing the classroom was sheltered English instruction. Sheltered English instruction is an instructional approach that engages ELLs above the beginner level in developing grade-level content-area knowledge, academic skills, and increased English proficiency (“What is”, n.d). Many of the ELL children in the classroom seemed to have a high level of English proficiency. However, the teachers modify their speech and, when necessary and feasible, content text so that English language learners can grasp important content concepts, facts, and questions (“what is”, n.d).Therefore, …show more content…

Thus in Pre-K there is two classrooms that are dual language classrooms. In Kindergarten there is one dual language classroom, and there are two classrooms that are ESL classrooms. Moos is gradually implementing dual language programs each year. Moos dual language programs are starting off with 80/20 model and gradually trying to achieve the 50/50 model for all dual language classrooms. The bilingual or ESL programs offered by Moos are only available until third grade, thus children then will be emerged into a mainstream classroom. The Kindergarten classroom #005A is located on the first floor across the hall from the nurse’s office in Bernhard Moos Elementary School. The classroom gives the impression of a warm and inviting environment when walking through the doors. When walking through the doors you first see a large table that seats five on one side and has one seat on the other. This table is mostly used for when Mrs. Wohlfeill wants to work with a particular group individually. Just right behind the table is the library which is located in the quiet corner of the room. There is a bookshelf has boxes within it that are labeled with the different genres of books. The
