Anyone who has even so much as taken a stroll through Durham Academy’s learning commons has noticed the preeminent problem facing Durham Academy today: lack of seating for its students. The learning commons, due to lack of space, is constantly overcrowded, and on a cold day, this is one of the only places student want to go during. As a teacher, I witness the commotion that occurs in the commons on a daily basis; some students are forced to sit on the floor, and food and garbage always seems to end up strewn around. Not only does this force teachers out of the spacious commons and into the teachers’ lounge, but it also seems to disturb visitors at our school who are deciding whether to send their kids here. In the event that the weather becomes too cold for a hardworking teacher to sit outside, I propose that the teachers join together to completely commandeer the learning commons. The course of action that will have the most benefits for Durham Academy is to force all the students, at gunpoint if necessary, to pack together on the lacrosse field. The first benefit of this plan is that it ensures fairness throughout the student body. Currently in the learning commons, some students find a chair to sit in while others must sit on the floor, which is clearly unfair. According to a reputable source, 95 percent of Durham Academy students are in favor of fairness, which is why I’m sure this will be a popular plan. The second benefit is that forcing students to bear freezing temperatures toughens them up.
