Eagle Scout Personal Statement

The National Center for Education Statistics made a projection in September of 2009 that 3.4 million students will graduate in the year of 2018. Of these 3.4 million students, 1.6% earn the title of Eagle Scout. I am an Eagle Scout. When I joined the Cub Scouts, my eight-year-old self anticipated joining my friends to wild adventures the way a recruitment poster hanging in the elementary cafeteria showed through its variety of colorful pictures. Reflecting back, Scouts didn’t groom me to become the thrill-seeking adrenaline junkie I envisioned at eight; instead, Troop 119 taught me to lead and serve. Having the role of a leader in the Boy Scouts helped me to become a man of integrity. Every decision, every action, every word is watched by a younger scout and an older scout, and every single one of these scouts looks to the troop leaders as role models. That is why I was the youngest Scout in my Patrol to become an Eagle Scout. That is why my Boyle County Football team won a state championship. That is also why I believe I need to challenge myself through the rigor required for this program has proven time and time again that it is the best. While, for example, part of my ego wants to boldly claim that no one else plays the position of lineman as well as me and that the team only won because of me, yet I know better. Instead, I surrounded myself with athletes whose natural ability may have morphed mine but they benefited from my desire and determination. Together we won. Why? We complimented each other. If the UL Honors needs more leaders, here I am. If the UL Honors needs someone willing to sacrifice and serve others, admit me. The way for me to be the best, I need to learn with the best just as I worked in the trenches for my football
