ANAD (National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders) was founded in 1976 by Vivian Meehan. ANAD was created in honor of Vivian's daughter, who struggled with an eating disorder but had no support to help her through it. ANAD’s mission is to help anyone with an eating disorder feel heard and guide them through recovery. ANAD helps anyone who has or has had an eating disorder, while they may not have recovered every single person who seeks help from them, they do make sure that nobody feels alone. ANAD offers online support groups, helplines, resources, and guides open to anyone and for free.
Parents play the major role in a child’s life and impact their future. Forms of different abuse is a common leader for over eating or not eating at all. To the Bone is a fictional drama/comedy directed by Marti Noxon portraying life with an eating disorder. Prior to the film beginning, an announcement appears on the screen which reads, “The film was created by and with individuals who have struggled with eating disorders, and it includes realistic depictions (Curtis, Miller, Lynn, & Noxon, 2017).” The purpose of this paper is to discuss and analyze the validity of the portrayal of eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa, in this film. The film commences with Ellen, the main character is a 20 year old female living and struggling with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, being kick out of an inpatient treatment program and returning her father and step mothers home for a brief period.

Although eating disorders affect people of all ages, adolescents are significantly impacted by this disorder (Teenage Eating Disorders, 2015). A study showed that three percent of adolescents in the United States are affected by an eating disorder, but most do not receive any form of treatment for their condition (Swanson, Crow, Grange, Swendsen, & Merikangas, 2011). Adolescents are not given the resources or support to deal with eating disorders. Despite a parent’s option to take their child to a clinic, adolescents are not always comfortable speaking with parents. It is evident that adolescents need help to deal with these disorders.
