The Ecology and Behavior of Manatees
Name
The manatee is part of the order Sirenia. The name originates from the sirens of Greek mythology. When the sirens first spotted the manatee, they mistook them for mermaids. There are three different species of manatees in this order (Hartman v.). One species is the West Indian manatee, trichechus manatus. The scientific name for Florida manatees is trichechus manatus latirostris. The scientific name for the Antillean manatee is Trichechus manatus manatus. The second species is the West African manatee, trichechus senegalensis. The third species is the Amazonian manatee, trichechus inunguis. The name manatee is from the Haitian name “manati.”

Florida has the temperature range of very high heat and a chilly winter. Since Florida has these conditions, the manatees love to travel along the coast. They typically travel between the coasts of North Carolina and among the islands of the Caribbean. They also travel on the opposite side of Florida through the Gulf of Mexico to Brazil. It is common to spot a West Indian manatee even though the population has reduced tremendously (Zeiller114).
The Amazonian manatee is very rare to be found. They can be found near the Rio Tapajos. These types of manatees are usually kept in aquariums due to how rare they are. The West African manatee can be found in the coastal waters of Senegal and Angola. They like to travel up to 100 miles, therefore if you catch in between these cities, you may be considered lucky (Zeiller 111).

Some of these animals include sharks, crocodiles, hippos, and electric fishes (Zeiller 110). These manatees must have calm warm water. They like the water temperature to be warmer than 64° F. When finding this species of manatee, one will find mangroves around them (Reynolds and Odell 88-89). Amazonian manatees also like to live in freshwater systems. These types of manatees like to stay in the dark water of the Amazon. These manatees prefer the water temperature to be around 77°- 86° F. They also enjoy areas with a lot of vegetation (Reynolds and Odell
