Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Some said that Edgar’s dad died, but others say that he abandoned his family. 2 years after David abandoned his family, Elizabeth gave birth to a baby girl. Elizabeth died December 8, 1811, in Richmond, Virginia at 24 years old from falling ill with most likely an infectious disease. Elizabeth died before Edgar was three, but Elizabeth most likely died with her children being with her when it happened. Both of Edgar’s parents were professional actors. Edgar’s parents were David Poe Jr and Elizabeth Arnold. Edgar and his siblings were separated after their parents died. Edgar is the second child of three children. John and Frances raised Edgar in Richmond, Virginia. John was a person who shipped tobacco. John tried to turn Edgar into a businessman and a Virginia gentlemen. When Poe went back to Richmond after getting kicked out of something, he went to see his fiancee and found out that she had become engaged to another man. Two years after his fiancee became engaged to another man, Poe found out that Frances Allan was dying of tuberculosis and wanted to see him before she died. Frances was already buried by the time that Poe returned to Richmond. Frances Allan was the only mother Poe ever had. Allan helped Poe gain an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, after Allan and Poe reconciled. Poe heard that Allan remarried without even telling him or inviting him, while Poe was at West Point. Allan died leaving Poe out of his will, and providing for a child Allan had never seen, while Poe was in Baltimore. Poe is widely acknowledged as the inventor in the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre. Poe made his living as America’s first great book reviewer and theoretician.
