LR1 [Literature Review #1] 02-02-2018 Today, the literature we are reviewing is, “The Philosophy of Composition” (1846) by Edgar Allan Poe. This literature explains the process Edgar Allen Poe uses to create a story or poem, such as ‘The Raven’. At the beginning of the piece, the first thing Poe mentions is that a literary work should be short. “If any literary work is too long to be read at one sitting, we must be content to dispense with the immensely important effect derivable from unity of impression- for, if two sittings be required, the affairs of the world interfere, and everything like totality is at once destroyed” (10).
With famous single words and the haunting meaning behind them, “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” Edgar Allen Poe’s poems are almost a mirror of each other. Both have a narrator that duels between sanity and in sanity. In both poems the narrator deals with the lost of their love ones. The reader can see that each man deals with the loss of his wife differently and the slipping of the narrators sanity in the process. How the narrators loose their sanity and how their surrounding caters to the downward spiral cause the two poems with similar theme is contrast with each other.

Some said that Edgar’s dad died, but others say that he abandoned his family. 2 years after David abandoned his family, Elizabeth gave birth to a baby girl. Elizabeth died December 8, 1811, in Richmond, Virginia at 24 years old from falling ill with most likely an infectious disease. Elizabeth died before Edgar was three, but Elizabeth most likely died with her children being with her when it happened.

Throughout his life, Poe had always lived through the most chaotic and evil of time. His parents died while he was 3 years old. After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.
