Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. ("Edgar Allan Poe Biography"). Because Poe was born in such a diverse city, he had a great chance to become a successful person. He was born to famous actors David Poe, Jr and beautiful Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe. He had an older brother named William Henry Poe and a young sister named Rosalie Poe. At the age of two Edgar’s father left his mother with no conscience, not knowing that long after Elizabeth would die and leave 3 children alone. At the age of six he was adopted. The man that took in and adopted Poe was an outstanding Richmond merchant named John Allan. When turning seven, he was sent to a school in Stoke Newington, London, where he remained for six years. (Edgar Allan Poe - Books and Biography) Poe’s adolescent life could not get any better. He had a father who paid for his tuition at school and grew attached to him ever since he met Poe. during the next three years he studied under private tutors, at the residence of the Allen’s in Richmond. In 1826(age 17) he entered the University of Virginia, where he remained less than a year. Even though John Allen had plenty of money he gave Edgar only a third of what he needed to pay the college. The military was a great chance for Poe to get discipline and forget about all the mistakes he has done in the past. He did very adequate in the Army and acquired the rank of sergeant major.
