Edgar Allan Poe’s Mysterious Death Have you ever been watching a movie so scary that it gave you nightmares? The father of all scary movies, Edgar Allan Poe, was a very mysterious man even at his death. Poe wrote very many mysterious and spooky stories that set the standard for the horror genre as we know it today. It seems almost fitting that even Poe’s real life was mysterious, as nobody know for sure how he actually died.

The Prince hides in his castle with friends but death creeps up and kills him and everybody else. After reading all the conspiracies theory’s about the cause of Edgar Allen Poe’s death, I conclude, Edgar Allen Poe died of multitude of causes. Pre-existing conditions and abusive physical treatment led to Poe’s death. Conditions created by being exposed to carbon monoxide and heavy metal poisoning. Pre-existing conditions like cholera, spasms, epilepsy, and diabetes. Poe suffered from brain tumors and heart problems.
Poe then received his middle name, “Allan”, from the adoptive family. Although he formed a bond with the mother, Frances, that luxury did not extend to the father, John (Biography.com Editors; Giordant; “Edgar”; “John”). John Allan was a successful tobacco farmer, which he desired to pass on to Poe. However, Poe did not want to partake in such a career. He was sent to the University of Virginia, where the minute quantity of currency sent to Poe for college was less than not enough.
Edgar Allen Poe’s father had deserted them when he was a very young boy and he didn’t know how his own father could do that to his own blood and flesh. Edgar’s mother tragically died when he was at age two. When he was a young boy his parents were traveling actors. After his mother died in 1811, Edgar Allen Poe had become a ward for John Allen who was an incredibly wealthy Richmond merchant and had everything that Poe wished he had but didn’t have at all.
Life is like a mystery and so is Poe’s death. There are two different reasons people believe that caused Poe’s death. Poe’s death was either caused by acholism or rabies. There are evidence for both reasons. Poe’s death is caused by acholism because the evidence that is provided is more reliable.
As I can see his way of thinking, I suppose that he identified passion and emotions as enemies of his own mind, because both of the mentioned human characteristics cause vulnerability that he intended to hide by the image of perfectly designed works. Eventually he found his own voice and ended up creating literature by the use of elements that he thought to be the most poetic and sentimental, such as death and beauty. Poe examined the essential components that define the human personality, like moods, obsessions and wishes. As Block writes, his genuine way of writing about the significant human experiences paved the way for his success by impressing his audiences. (Block, 394.)
Edgar Allan Poe had experienced a loss multiple times. Poe married his cousin when she was 13, he was 27. Both of Poe’s parents died in 1811 and so he was raised as a foster child. In the poem “Annabel Lee” he talks about how his love Annabel Lee passed away. In the poem “The Raven” he talks about his love, Lenore passing away and The Raven comes to him and is repetitive.
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most notable poets as he has had many powerful and creative pieces that became very popular. As a young boy he had many problems growing up Poe lost his mother when he was only sixteen and left to fend for himself. Throughout his life he was a hopeless romantic who got into a lot of relationships. One of the most known relationships that he got into was with Annabel Lee in which he had created as his last poem before his unexpected death, Annabel Lee. At the time he wasn’t only mourning the death of Annabel Lee but also the death of his wife a few years back which is the reason that he wrote The Raven.
