When many hear of the author Edgar Allan Poe, they instantly start thinking about the famous poetry writer, who mostly wrote about American Gothic. In each of Poe’s stories, there are always specific techniques that he uses to create a sort of “Poe exclusive” tale. While Poe was growing up, he didn’t have such an easy life, but his stories allowed him to showcase his many different techniques and styles.
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19th, in the year of 1809. Even though he was born in Boston, he grew up in Baltimore, which was where his father was born. When Poe was three years old, both his mother and father died, leaving him to be raised by his foster parents, John and Frances Allan in Richmond, Virginia. He was sent off to one of the best boarding schools, with an agreement that he had with John Allan because, he didn’t receive enough funds to pay for his classes. His stories mark him as one of the originators of both horror and detective fiction” (Poets.org 14). Poe became an icon that others looked up to while he also had a positive impact on those that were writers. His dark stories that were filled with drama and emotion, always somehow attracted his audience. They also included the four themes that he always used in his stories which were pride, love, beauty and death (Quinn 512).
