Poe’s parents were David Poe and Elizabeth Poe. When Poe was very young, David Poe left the family. When Poe was three, Elizabeth Poe died due to tuberculosis. After the absence of Poe’s parents, John Allan took care of Poe. This is why Edgar Allan Poe had “Allan” in his name. When Poe grew older, John Allan wanted Poe to be a merchant, but Poe preferred writing over being a merchant. After this, conflict emerged between Poe and Allan. Soon after, Poe went to the University of Virginia. One of the things Poe learned there was how to speak French and Latin. Eventually, Poe was kicked out of University because John Allan did not give Poe enough money to pay for tuition. In 1827, Poe went to West Point, but he got kicked out due to him putting off his duties. Later in 1829, Poe lived with Mrs. Clemm and his cousin, Virginia. Many of Poe’s jobs involved him editing magazines or newspapers. Unfortunately, Poe did not earn much money as an editor. One day, he decided to make a magazine known as The Stylus. Soon after, The Stylus failed. Even though Poe had a job, he still wrote poems and short stories. Some of the techniques he often used were symbolism, meter, musical elements, and romanticism. Often, Poe wrote spooky short stories and poems. Poe also judged other people’s work. Because of all this, many people today are still inspired by Poe. Like all writers though, Poe was not perfect.
