The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or EEOC is a federal agency that administers and enforces civil rights laws against workplace discrimination. The EEOC was established on July 2, 1965. The EEOC investigates discrimination complaints based on an individual's race, children, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, gender identity, genetic information. The EEOC's first complainants were female flight attendants, however at first the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ignored sex discrimination complaints, and the prohibition against sex discrimination in employment went unenforced until 1963.

Employers in both the private and public sectors benefit from the equal pay act of 1963 because Organizations that treat both male and female staff fairly may find an increase in productivity that comes from higher morale and employee commitment. These organizations may also find it easier to recruit and retain a skilled workforce as well as sustaining or improving their reputation because a transparent pay structure gives employees confidence that their pay is fair and non-discriminatory. Unlike the equal pay act and title vii of the civil rights act the PDA has been far less enforced. The pregnancy discrimination act was brought into light in 1978 to stop the discrimination against any woman that are pregnant but believe it or not, too many employers are still refusing to comply with pregnant workers' requests for temporary accommodations at work based on medical needs. The EEOC statistics on pregnancy discrimination show that pregnant women are being discriminated against more than ever. According to (Zillman, 2014) In fiscal year 1997, more than 3,900 pregnancy discrimination charges were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by the fiscal year 2013 that number had shot up to more than 5,342 filled discrimination charges.
