Elijah Muhammad, born Elijah Robert Poole (October 7, 1897 – February 25, 1975), was an American religious leader, black separatist, and self-proclaimed Messenger of Allah who served as the leader of the Nation of Islam (NOI) from 1934 until his passing in 1975. In the 1930s, Muhammad officially founded the Nation of Islam, a religious movement originating from the teachings of Wallace Fard Muhammad, which focused on promoting black empowerment, economic independence, and racial segregation. Muhammad's teachings influenced the conversions of prominent figures such as Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali to the Nation of Islam, who both played significant roles in raising national awareness of the organization. Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr. was born on August 17, 1887, in Saint Ann's Bay, Jamaica. His father was a stonemason, and his mother was a domestic servant. He believed that nationhood was the strongest security for everyone, not just African Americans but everyone that was striving for a goal. So with his teaching the were a little different for the others. Malcolm X was born on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, NE to an African American man and a fair skin mother. Early in his life, he was adapted to racism because of his parents. At age 6, Malcolm's father was killed by white depression and that played a great impact on his life along with the racism that he faced in school from his white peers. This causes Malcolm to see the world differently. When Malcolm became older he turned to a life of crime which eventually caused him to go to jail. While in jail, Malcolm X was recruited by the nation of Islam while in there. He then started to follow their belief and preach their word. he preached for black empowerment. he dropped the "slave name" Little and adopted the initial X. he was with the nation of islam until 1964.
