Emotions And Conformity In The Workplace

Many things factor into leadership of groups within an organization. One behavior that is particularly onerous to any leader or group is narcissism. I would like to discuss some experiences with this issue and how emotions and conformity relate to it in the work place. Leading a group is a challenge but especially when some of these issues come into play. First let’s discuss emotions as it relates to narcissism and then we will discuss conformity. Emotions In my line of work it is very typical to have multiple type A personalities in one unit or organization. Having his many powerful personalities can make for interesting discussions. There is however one issue that occasionally comes up that is detrimental to the team concept and that is narcissism. A leader in organization of any kind cannot develop these traits as it is extremely toxic. I have often heard people state that someone is emotional and therefore they are not making good decisions. In factRobbins & Judge (2002) state that emotions are critical to rational thinking, the case is made by the case of Phineas Gage who had a brain injury, lost all emotion and began to make self-destructive decisions. Emotions are important as they help an individual maintain rational behavior when making decisions as long as they are balanced. In one case I had a Commanding Officer who displayed hardly any emotion and was very narcissistic. He made decisions without regard for the effect it would have on others, and considered display of emotions weakness. This wreaked havoc on his organization as Sailors did not give him input they just told him what they knew he wanted to hear.
