From an athlete’s perspective, having energy is a huge factor in becoming successful. Before a sporting event, some people drink energy drinks or coffee for that extra boost of energy. As an athlete, I wouldn’t have either, but if I had to choose I would pick coffee. As a kid, I would only drink a shot of coffee, there is no way I’m going to have a ton of coffee before my sporting event.

There are many similarities between energy drinks and coffee. One similarity is that they both have caffeine in the ingredients. In the text it states, “Coffee and energy drinks do have caffeine in common.” It is a fact that caffeine can cause heart problems. Another similarity is that they both have a lot of sugar in them. One difference is that because of the amount of sugar in energy drinks the effect will be a short energy spike which will then cause an insulin response and use all of the available sugar in your body. Coffee can have sugar but, you have the decision to add it. In the text it states, “Furthermore the addition of sugar as mentioned is only likely to give you an energy spike.” Another difference is that coffee is usually enjoyed warm while energy drinks are usually cold or not refrigerated. If you do have a hot coffee there is a chance that you can get cramps or feel like it isn’t fully digested. In the text it states, “Because it is enjoyed hot, this means you can feel it much more in your belly and that means you'd feel it 'slosh' as well were you to move around.” If you do drink an energy drink, it can slosh also but, there is a higher chance of it being digested faster than coffee. Lastly, another difference is that energy drinks usually have a “natural” fruit flavor, coffee has a bitter or sweetened flavor.
