English 111 Reflective Essay

I still remember the first day of English 111 like it was yesterday, I especially remember the first assignment on ‘My Mother Tongue’ as it hit home for me being an international student from Australia. I thought I wrote a well-constructed essay for my first at University level, and for myself I feel I always write better when the subject means something to me. As the year progressed I wanted this to disappear and just be great at all types of writing whether I liked it or not. Before English 111 I always approached essays with the standard 5 paragraph formatting that they funnel you into in high school. But now because of the freedom English 111 gave me, it made me challenge this standard format and let me express myself in different ways, without going crazy of course.

The essay on ‘Ain’t So/Is Not’ made me think a lot about how I write because, I tend to use a lot of colloquial language and phrases in hope that it will connect with the reader. Reading this essay gave me a greater understanding of how to blend this colloquial and academic language together. It then became more effective for me and I was able to write better papers because of it. I am now able to consider all the factors effectively before determining what language I should use, i.e. target audience. …show more content…

I had to take myself away and look at it from a different angle to be able to grasp the concepts and write effectively so the audience could really understand where I was coming from. The ‘FWoRSM’ also gave me a better understanding of types of reading, while making me aware of it when I was reading myself.
